Recently, I’ve been dwelling on these two words. Most of the time, we focus on all of the things that God CAN do, but I think every now and again it’s good to remember that there are some things that He CAN’T do.
Now, I know that sounds a little negative but some of you probably already know where I’m going with this. I am so thankful that there are some things that God can’t do.
GOD CAN’T LIE!
I’ve heard this preached a few times over my life, and it just hits me every time! It is a huge comfort knowing that our God can not lie. If He says it, He will do it. If He said it, then He means it!
Numbers 23:19a
19a God is not a man, that he should lie.
This is just the first part of that verse, but here it says quite literally that God can’t lie.
Need more proof? Here are a few more references to check out: Hebrews 6:18 says it is impossible for God to lie, and Titus 1:2 says God cannot lie!
And since our God can’t lie, it brings me to my next thought.
GOD CAN’T BREAK A PROMISE!
Technically, this goes hand in hand with the fact that God can’t lie, but it just really needs to be highlighted. I can’t help but think of Abraham and Isaac. God promised a nation to be brought forth from a son of Abraham and Sarah. They couldn’t believe it, and even though they tried to get ahead of God and take things into their own control, God still kept His promise. They eventually brought forth Isaac.
When God asked Abraham to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, he trusted God to keep His promise. When God saw His faith and obedience, He provided a ram to take Isaac’s place.
God is a promise keeper!
Even when we try to get in the way and take things into our own hands, He still keeps his promises.
There is this quote floating around that I’ve read before, and it’s kind of funny, but it’s kind of true.
When God put a calling on your life, He already factored in your stupidity.
I do think we should strive to be as obedient as possible, but God already knows you and what you are capable of. In spite of all of that, He still intends to keep His promises in your life. It’s just easier if we follow His directions and His will!
Let’s look at just a few of His promises found in scripture.
• He promised to save us if we call upon the name of the Lord. Roman’s 10:13
• He promised to provide our every need! Philippians 4:19
• He promised to give wisdom if we asked for it. James 1:5
• He promised to be our peace and comfort! John 14:27 and 1 Corinthians 1:3-4
• He promised to protect us and to be our defense against the enemy. Psalm 94:22 and Psalm 91:1-4
• He promised to be with us always. Matthew 28:20b
• He promised to give us dying grace so that we don’t have to walk through death alone. Psalm 23:4
It goes on and on and on!
The promises can even be things that you believe God has specifically revealed to you.
I want you to take time to think and reflect on the promises that God has for you.
You hold onto those promises no matter what it looks like.
Even if your world is falling apart, hold onto the promises of God.
I recently heard a preacher friend of ours say, you don’t have problems, you have promises.
How true is that?
Your problem is just an opportunity for God to keep His promises!
God can’t lie and He can’t break His promises!
GOD CAN’T FAIL!
My next “God can’t” is simply that God can’t fail!
God sent His son Jesus to come to this earth and then eventually to die for our sins, to be buried for 3 days, and to then rise again on the 3rd day.
When I think about the life of Jesus and all that He went through, I realize that if at any time during His walk on this earth, if he had slipped up that we would not have had a savior. We would have no hope.
I think about when Jesus went into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Jesus had already fasted 40 days, and the physical part of Him was weary, tired, and hungry.
Then satan appears ready to try and cause Jesus to slip up and ruin our salvation.
Satan came at Him 3 times to tempt Him.
But our God can’t fail!
So, each time, Jesus responded with scripture!
Our God can’t fail!
After being tempted of the Devil , He began his ministry, knowing what was ahead of Him.
Our God can’t fail!
He went on and was bruised for our transgressions. He was beaten and mocked. They wanted to crucify Him.
He still didn’t fail!
He took the long walk up Golgotha’s hill, and was hung upon the cross.
He still didn’t fail.
The weight of the world and all our sin was upon Him.
He still didn’t fail!
When He died and they buried Him, He defeated death, hell, and the grave, and he rose again!
Because our God can’t fail!
Salvation was complete and available to all who will receive Him.
If He can go through all of that, then He can handle all of my problems, your problems, everyone’s problems.
It’s not too hard for Him!
Because God Can’t Fail!
God can’t lie, He can’t break a promise, and He can’t fail!
God Can’t
There are many more things I believe that God can’t do, and I would love to hear from my readers some of the things that come to your mind. Leave me a comment below!
Here are a few more with Bible references for you to think about!
- He can’t leave you or forsake you! Deuteronomy 31:6
- He can’t leave you the way He found you! 2 Corinthians 5:17
- He can’t change or stop being God! Malachi 3:6
Let’s pray
Dear heavenly Father, we thank you for another day of life! We are so grateful for all of our blessings! We know that you are a mighty God full of power, strength, and love. Today, we are grateful that there are a few things that you can’t do! We are most thankful that you went to the cross to save us and that you never once failed or sinned. We are so grateful that salvation was completed so that we may have eternal life with you in heaven. Please forgive us of our unconfessed sins… the ones we know about and the ones we don’t. Please help us to be a light in the world and to share the gospel with others. Help us not be afraid to be witnesses because we know that you are always with us and you will never forsake us. We love you, and we pray all of these things in Jesus’ name, Amen!
